stakemate_edited-1So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. —Ephesians 5:33

A “stale-mate” is a situation where no one can win. In pre-tank day war, it referred to the ‘trench-warfare’ which consisted of miles of trenches cut into the earth supported by machine guns and high-caliber artillery. If either side tried to move forward, advance or progress they would be mowed down by the rapid-fire of the machine guns.

In marriage we often find ourselves in a “stale-mate” situation in which we have entrenched ourselves in a position, dug-in our heels deep and are prepared to stay and defend it for as long as it takes.

Now this is not psycho-analytical mumbo-jumbo-gumbo stuff, anyone who’s been married for more than a couple of days knows this is reality. No matter how good your marriage is, there will inevitably be a time(s) when the sweet honeymoon temporarily turns into bitter-vinegar.

To clarify, as a man of faith in Christ Jesus, who believes that manhood is synonymous with Christ-likeness and that the husband must love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave His life for her, I am not declaring or confessing defeat in any way, shape or form. I am just uncovering what most marriages “cover-up” because they care more about maintaining their “happy” image and what others will think of them if they knew of the big-mess their “cheesy” smiles hide.

To come to my point, I believe that this is the all-in-one Biblical reason, cause, remedy, prescription and wisdom in order to recognize, prevent, avoid and overcome a “stale-mate” in which your marriage becomes a stagnant war-zone engaged in a “dead-lock” battle to “divide and conquer” instead of “unite and prosper”.

Please think about it and ask Holy Spirit to open the eyes of your understanding so that your marriage and family can advance, progress and move forward, instead of being suppressed, oppressed, depressed and locked in a “turf-war” that shoots each other down every time anyone takes any step in any direction.

Here it is: “A Man Won’t And Can’t Love A Woman Who Won’t And Can’t Respect A Man; And A Woman Won’t And Can’t Respect A Man Who Won’t And Can’t Love A Woman”. Did you get it? It is how we as men and women are wired. This is the great “stale-mate” I’m speaking of! There will be no peace or healthy progress unless and until the husband in wisdom and understanding learns to “love his wife” and the wife in wisdom and understanding learns how to “respect her husband…period.

The Biblical wisdom is “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave up His life, himself for her” and for “wives to respect their husbands”. Unless the Architect’s blueprint for marriage is correctly followed, the foundation of marriage will be weak, crack and crumble causing the marriage to fall-apart and maybe even like an old unlivable abandoned building—be condemned and in need of demolition.

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Husbands learn how to “love“. Wives learn how to “respect“. In a bloated “information age”, there are no legitimate excuses for not knowing (ignorance) or not learning (stupidity).

Read it again until it sinks into your spirit. “So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” —Ephesians 5:33
